Harlequin Mills & Boon Medical Romance Novels, Holiday Celebrations

The Medical Romance Team are proud to present…Hope Children’s Hospital!

When it comes to Christmas you can never be too prepared! And the Medical Romance Team certainly weren’t wasting any time when it came to planning Hope Children’s Hospital, our Christmas continuity for 2018. We started brainstorming last October (yes, we were that excited…!). It’s always a huge amount of fun coming up with ideas, and this year’s continuity was no different. In fact, it may be one of our favourites, so we wanted to give you a sneak peak of what goes on behind the scenes, and share all the festive fun with you…

But first, what do we mean when we say ‘continuity’?

A ‘continuity’ is the Mills & Boon team’s term for a miniseries of linked books which are written by different authors and which the editors come up with the overall story theme and individual plot outlines for. We normally brainstorm four romances for these…so naturally they’re a highlight of our year!

And how did Hope Children’s Hospital come to life?

Well, first off, the Medical Romance Team got comfortable and settled into a meeting room (with copious amounts of tea and treats, of course!) to begin thinking about what we wanted the continuity to be about. Quickly deciding that we wanted something centred around the hope and joy of Christmas on a children’s ward, it was time to invite the rest of the M&B Team to join the party (sorry…the meeting).

And with the help of a few mince pies to get the ideas flowing, we discussed everything! From the type of hospital and what fabulous location it would be set in, to who the heroes and heroines would be – this was such fun! Then, and maybe most importantly, we talked about how each of the romances would interweave and interact with one another so that readers could fully immerse themselves in the magical world of Hope Children’s Hospital.

Next, it was time to hand over to our fabulously talented authors and let them loose on their individual stories (they’re the expert storytellers, after all!). And luckily they loved the continuity just as much as we did! They were excited to get collaborating themselves – with 4 stories, 4 authors and 4 editors, communication was key! – and turn the outlines into pulse-racing love stories with a huge helping of medical drama and festive spirit!

And, now, one year later, here we are! The first two books have already hit the shelves, the final two won’t be far behind, and it’s time to cuddle up with a hot beverage of your choice and dive into this year’s Medical Romance Christmas continuity.

Here’s what you can look forward to in…

The Medical Romance Team brings you a sneak peek… at Christmas in July!

It’s the height of summer (or so we’re told…it’s not always obvious, as our office’s view of London alternates between sunshine and storms!) but the Medical Romance team still just couldn’t wait to bring you this sneak peek at one of our most exciting projects of the year. We always have a huge amount of fun when we plan out a Christmas continuity, and this quartet was one of our all-time favourites, so we’re thrilled to share it with you!

What is a continuity, we hear you ask?

A ‘continuity’ is the Mills & Boon team’s term for a miniseries of linked books which are written by different authors and which the editors come up with the overall story theme and individual plot outlines for. We get to brainstorm between four and eight romances for these…so naturally they’re a highlight of our year!

So, what are the ingredients to a Christmas continuity?

Well, for those of you who are wondering why the editors plan out the stories in a miniseries, the answer is that this way we can create a unified concept and timeline, allowing four unique romances to interweave and interact in one fabulous location—in this case, we couldn’t resist the cosiness and charm of Teddy’s Centre for Babies and Birth! By working out a timeline before the authors begin writing, we could even decide in which story the snowflakes begin to fall…

Next, we bring together the talents of four different amazing authors and let them loose on their individual stories! The character concepts and themes are already in place, but it’s the authors who work their magic to turn these outlines into thrilling, heart-racing love stories with the medical drama we all adore! Often continuity authors collaborate on a dedicated email thread to decide how their own hero and heroine will make a guest appearance in another author’s book, too.

And of course, when the team gets the thrill of reading the quartet finally brought to life, we also get the chance to come up with incredibly Christmassy and heartwarming titles (our favourite kind)!

Here’s your sneak peek – enjoy!

It’s hard to believe that only last July we sat and enjoyed a mince pie (or two) while brainstorming the heroes and heroines behind this festive four-book treat, and now that it’s 2016 we can’t contain our excitement that the wonderful Christmas Miracles in Maternity miniseries will be hitting shelves in November!

To get you in the mood for cuddles, children and Christmas, here’s a sneak peek at what you can look forwards to this festive season…

Welcome to 200 Harley Street. Glamorous. Thrilling. Emotional.

Last year, following the success of the Sydney Harbour Hospital series, eight of your medical authors toiled away on a fab, new, editor-led, medical continuity set in an exclusive plastic surgery clinic on London’s famous Harley Street.

These are the opening paragraphs of the bible sent to us by the medical editorial team.

“Welcome to 200 Harley Street, the luxurious premises of an exclusive plastic and reconstructive surgery clinic in the world-renowned Harley Street, in the heart of London’s glittering West End. Owned by two very different brothers, Leo and Ethan Hunter, 200 Harley Street undertakes both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Playboy Leo handles the rich and famous clients, enjoying the red carpet glamour of London’s A-list social scene, while brooding ex-army doc Ethan focuses his time on his passion – transforming the lives of injured war heroes and civilian casualties of war.

The Hunter Clinic’s reputation for excellence has attracted only the top surgeons, who specialise in post-cancer reconstruction, paediatric plastic surgery, hand surgery, facial reconstruction, burns and microsurgery, as well as cosmetic procedures. They are supported by a dedicated team of skilled, highly professional nurses.

Linked to the Princess Catherine Hospital (Kate’s), favoured by royal families around the world, and The Lighthouse Children’s Hospital, consultations and operations are carried out both at the clinic and the hospitals.

Emotion and drama abound against the backdrop of one of Europe’s most glamorous cities, as Leo and Ethan work through their tensions, find women that will transform their lives and their emotional landscapes, Europe’s hottest royal, Prince Marco is brought in for an operation himself, and the woman who tore the brothers apart makes a spectacular return!”

You can see why all eight of us loved working on this, right? 🙂 Who can resist the lure of such a great setting and such a diverse range of characters?

The first two books release in April. Carol’s has the US cover. Scarlet’s has the UK cover – pretty glam, aren’t they?

I know many of you have been hanging out for Finn and Evie’s (the two continuity characters) story and I was stoked to be asked to write it because, even when I was writing Mia and Luca’s book (#3), my emotional investment in Finn and Evie was far greater (but shh, you didn’t hear that from me!)

And I have to say, I think a lot of that had to do with Finn. Honestly, I have never ever written such an awful, rude, callous, bloody-minded, exasperating man in all my writing years – I just had to give the stubborn man a HEA!! The authors who worked on the continuity were given Dr Greg House as an example of Finn’s persona and I think without that, I would have been lost because I just don’t write men like that. So, every time I had to write a Finn-being-a-bastard-again scene I would think – how/what would House say?

There are some great examples of Finn’s razor tongue in this fabulous review. Yes! Evie’s Bombshell already has a 5 star review!   🙂

If you’re interested, pretty soon Harlequin UK should be posting a short scene I wrote last year which is the “prequel” to Finn and Evie. It’s a snapshot of their first meeting and I had a lot of fun with that scene 🙂

Oh and if you love continuities as much as I do there’s a fab new one out this year from our US authors centred around a NYC children’s hospital nicknamed Angels . It also has an Aussie spinoff of 4 books (set at the Gold Coast) of which I’m writing the last. The first Angels book (there are 8)  is out in March and maybe one of our US authors will come and tell us all a bit more about that if we ask real nice and promise them chocolate 🙂

But, in the meantime, tell me about you. Did you read/like the SHH books? Got a favourite (and no, it doesn’t have to be mine – my ego can stand it, trust me). Do you like your Alpha’s alpha like Finn or Alpha with a nice big slice of beta to keep him tamed?
