The Writing Life

Research Fun! by Fiona Lowe

Next year, there’s a new medical romance series coming out set in London. I have a book in it and I’ve had so much fun researching and drawing on my memories of London. The first film I can recall seeing was Mary Poppins and years later, I was very fond of watching Upstairs, Downstairs. When I finally got to London, I remember thinking I was on the set! Google Maps is my research friend along with Google in general.
I had the BEST FUN reading up on the Savoy Hotel. savoyOh, if those walls could talk! Fortunately, enough of the wild and wonderful stories and antics of the patrons were written down. Fred Astaire danced on the roof. It was a fave hotel of Marilyn Monroe’s and way back in the day, the rich and famous threw extravagant parties. Think Mr. Selfridge!

As you may or may not know, I have written a women’s fiction novel,  Daughter of Mine. It will be out March 2017 and closer to the date I will fill you in more on that. Right now, I have to start the second WF book and I’ve been researching. This took me to an artisan sourdough bread bakery.

BaDSCF5502ck in 2000, the Calverts started Irrewarra Sourdough, baking bread in historic stables on their western district property. From their first order of 100 loaves it has grown to baking 22,000 loaves a week as well as extending into other products. It was fabulous seeing all this glorous bread being made by hand. The boys and I were lucky enough to be sent home with some bread:-)

The research part of writing a book is always fun. It’s such a shame I now have to knuckle down and write the sucker 😉

Are you currently researching something? Perhaps it’s a h0liday/vacation? A new career? New Job? House? Or a new mattress…that’s my next job! Fill me in, I’d love to hear 🙂

The Joys of November in southern Down Under

Spring paddocks and canola
Spring paddocks and canola

I live in the south-eastern part of Australia and much to the surprise of many overseas visitors, we get cold weather. Sure, it isn’t northern hemisphere cold, although it did snow on the beach once for an hour(!) however, compared to my northern Australian friends, I live in a temperate zone. This means for a teeny tiny part of the year, for two of the three months of spring it is GREEN! 🙂

My garden is emerald. It won’t last long but for now I am loving it and the spring roses. I’ve planted rhubarb, strawberries, lettuces and updated the herb garden. We’ve mulched and pruned and now DH is cleaning the pavers around the pool for that first hot day that will turn my emerald green to burnt brown. Given the forecast, that may be today!

So please enjoy my garden while it’s green and under the photos is my cover reveal for my next medical romance 🙂 Do you have a favourite rose?

Unlocking Her Surgeon’s Heart, a Harlequin Mills & Boon medical romance is out in the world. If you enjoy the TV series, Call the Midwife, you’ll love this book. It’s part of the Midwives-on-Call series and my story is set in a small rural town. Lilia is the midwife and the last thing she needs is a grumpy, city surgeon trying to throw his weight around. I hang out a bit on Facebook and Twitter if you’d like to join me there.

I’m currently reading The Lake House by Kate Morton. I hope your November has plenty of time for reading!

Special Days Bring Mixed Emotions

As I IMG_1688[2]write this, it’s Mothers’ Day in a vareity of places around the world. In Australia, it was  yesterday but due to the time difference, it’s still MD in the USA, Italy and Mexico. The UK celebrate Mothering Day in March and for some reason, in France, it’s not until May 31st. According to Google, Oman has THREE Mothers’ Days in the year so I guess around the world mothers are covered at some point across the year.

My definition of motherhood is very loose on this day and I like to think it acknowledges all adult women, because  most women are “mothering” aka caring in some way for someone.

I have absolutely NO expectations on Mothers’ Day and I learned fast that the best mothers’ days are the ones I stage manage. 😉 That way there is absolutely NO room for disappointment 😉 Yesterday, as a mother, I was required to attend a school jazz lunch and listen to talented students playing jazz.  I was served champagne, the food was yummy, I didn’t have to wash up and the music was great. When I got home, I decamped for the couch, where in very unusual circumstances, I had total control over the television and I sobbed my way through an episode of Call the Midwife. Bliss!

I know Mothers’ day can be very fraught for many women and my only advice is to own the day and make it yours. Celebrate it the way you want; be selfish for once! Do what you need to do so the day doesn’t drag you down.

If you celebrated Mothers’ Day, what did you do?

Sexy Doctors and Hunky Cowboys! What’s not to love?

Untitled-5Here at Love Is The Best Medicine, we all love our romance with a medical chaser 🙂 We love television medical drama and we love our novels with medical themes. What’s not to love about the tough decisions our braod medical cast– from nurses and doctors to allied health professionals– have to make every day and how they balance it off with trying to have a personal life as well.

So many of the caring professions are so busy caring for others they’re not very good at caring for themselves. I think watching intelligent, talented people struggle to get that part of their life sorted out is a big part of the appeal of medical romance.

I’m super excited because Tuesday Jan 6th is the launch of my new Medicine River series, kicking off with Montana Actually and a fabulous hamper giveaway!  This book is a single-title novel (ie it’s big, 93,000 words) and it features Bear Paw, Montana; a small town nestled under the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. Filled with ranchers, cowboys and a cast of townsfolk, Bear Paw is like most small rural towns in the western world, it has trouble attracting doctors. When Dr. Josh Stanton arrives from Chicago to work and to write down his student-loan debt, he’s convinced he’d going to be welcomed with open arms and a ticker tape parade. It doesn’t quite work out that way!

I matched fish-out-of-water, Josh with Katrina McCade, an almost 30 year-old woman Bachelorbuttonswho has spent the last 8 years living out east. Like Josh, her life hasn’t gone according to her plan and now she’s back home in the heart of her family, struggling to be the independent woman she’s been for years. On top of family expectations, sliding back into her ordinal position with her siblings, and concern for her parents, the last thing she needs on her plate is a clueless, city doctor.

With 93,000 words, I have the luxury of being able to write two romances in the one book 🙂 Beau McCade, Katrina’s elder brother has more reason than most to be the strong, silent cowboy and over the years he’s retreated from the world, preferring to spend more time with the cows and the dogs on the ranch than people. When he meets Shannon, the new diner owner, he finds himself reluctantly needing to get more involved in life off the ranch.

The blurb for Montana Actually says… Passion burns under the bold Montana sky, but

9780425276952_Montana_Actually_CV_PROOFfalling in love doesn’t come easy…

City doctor Josh Stanton and his sports car don’t suit the country but with his medical school debt about the bury him, Josh has to make the best of a bad situation. Adjusting to his new job and life in the middle of nowhere isn’t easy, but at least the views of the mountains –and one distractingly attractive local–are stunning…

After eight years away, Katrina McCade is back in Bear Paw for a break from her life, bad choices–and men. But when a broad-shouldered stranger bursts into town, she finds herself unexpectedly saddled with the town’s sexy new doctor as a tenant. Katrina doesn’t need a man to make her happy, especially a disgruntled physician. But try telling her body that…

“A keeper. It made me laugh. I loved each character and wish I coud vist Bear Paw.” Catherine Anderson, New York Times bestselling author of Silver Thaw.
