Rainy Days and Mondays

Well, today isn’t Monday, but as I was writing this blog post, it was. And it was definitely raining. Most of the day, in fact. But, unlike the song, those kinds of days don’t “get me down.” I tend to like the rain. And sleeping to the sound of thunder is just bliss.

What wasn’t so blissful was the cold that went along with the rain, since we’re headed into winter, and the days are getting shorter. But what does make me happy is that I just got my story bible for the continuity I’ll be writing. And it’s a Christmas story. One of my favorite kinds of books to write! Did the editors plan it that way, hoping the festive lights and tinsel would light my muse’s fire? I don’t know, but I think it’s going to work. I’m very excited about the plot I’ve been given, and on Monday, I was busy setting up my chapters in Scrivener (the writing program I use). So, right now, it’s literally a series of twelve chapter headings and an expanse of empty pages. My imagination is running wild with how I can make this story my own.

Monday’s rain just added to my momentum, since I couldn’t get out and do anything. In fact, I drove to a nearby supermarket parking lot to get some peace and quiet, pushed back the seat as far as it would go and listened to the rain while I got my program set up. It was wonderful. Just me, the warmth of the car heater, and my still-to-be-written book.

rainy days and Mondays
The view from my car on a rainy Monday

And I can’t wait to start! I just came off a frenetic writing schedule and finally had time to stop and recharge my batteries. So just like the rain that was washing the thin layer of dust from my car, it cleared the cobwebs from my mind too. I’m ready to write.

I’m in love. With my characters. My story. My life. Even on a rainy, Monday morning!

To add to my joy, I just received the cover for my latest book. I love that too!

How about you? Do you like rainy days?

Harlequin Mills & Boon Medical Romance Novels, Reading, The Writing Life

Hero, hero, who loves a hero?

I am getting ready to write a new book, which is always an exciting prospect! One of a quad. And I am stoked. Because I’d already written a quad with the same fabulously talented authors, under the Hot Latin Docs! umbrella. We had a blast planning those books. And we’re already having fun figuring out how we’re going to link these new books, and most importantly…our heroes–hunky firefighters and paramedics who work out of the same station house. They also shared the same foster home growing up.

Did I mention how excited I am?

So, in planning my particular hero, Deakin Patera, I am having to figure out what makes this guy tick. Who is Deakin Patera? I’m discovering him little by little. And that makes me curious about what kind of heroes readers connect with.

I write a lot of playboys, but one of my favorite types of heroes is the angsty, broody, wounded, damaged, scarred–you get the picture–hero. Sometimes I dive so deep into the angst, though, that my hero has a hard time holding his breath long enough to reach the surface and retrieve his happily-ever-after. So this time, I will plan carefully (famous last words!).

Do you like angsty heroes? Or are you more of a fan of a hero with witty comebacks? Swashbucklers? Playboys? Bad boys? What kind of hero makes you go weak in the knees? I really want to know!

In the meantime, here are the covers from our Hot Latin Docs! quad, written by Annie O’Neill, Amy Ruttan, me, and Amalie Berlin. It was hard to leave those heroes behind, but I know I’m going to love this new cast of characters just as much!

Excerpt Wednesday-Alejandro’s Sexy Secret by Amy Ruttan

Okay, maybe it’s no real secret what Alejandro’s Sexy Secret is. I mean, if you the blurb you sort of know.

medical2Alejandro is the youngest of the Valentino brothers and some sites list my book as the first book in the Hot Latin Docs, but I’m actually book two of four. And I have to say this was so much fun to write. I know, I know I keep saying that, but it’s true. I just loved working with Annie, Amalie & Tina.

We created the “ugly” brothers, as they affectionately refer to one another and we’re the “ugly” sisters. And yeah, there’s more stuff from us in the works, we just have to get our crazy squirrels in a row (we don’t have ducks).

Last week Annie had you pull up a chair at Mad Ron’s, but since this is Alejandro, he’d like you to take a seat while he shares his routine with you! 😉

KIRI WAS WALKING the halls of a darkened Buena Vista. She’d been working late again and as she walked she realized that no one else was around.

What was going on?

She turned and the lights dimmed. Alejandro was at the end of the hall dressed in a suit, his head lowered, his hands behind his back. She was completely confused.

“Dr. Valentino?”

Music started and he began to dance. Just like that night in his hotel room in Vegas. Right down to the same suit.

Kiri sat down in a chair that suddenly appeared. She wanted to tell him to stop dancing, that it wasn’t appropriate to do his routine in the hospital, but she lost her voice and suddenly it didn’t matter that he was doing this in the hospital.

She was transfixed as he undid the knot in his tie, slowly pulling it off. Those dark eyes were glittering in the dim light and were focused on her. Holding her captive.

Kiri realized then she was at his mercy. Her body thrummed with need as he pulled off his jacket and shirt. She ran her hands over his body, over his hard, rippling muscles. Then he leaned over her, his lips brushing her ear.

“Mi tesoro,” he whispered. “I want you forever. Always. Only you.”

She closed her eyes and waited for a kiss.

Instead a blaring noise echoed in the hall and he moved away…

Kiri woke with a start. Her alarm clock was going off. It startled her and as she groggily reached for her glasses, she fumbled to find the alarm and shut it off.
With a sigh she sank back into the pillows. Sunshine was peeking in through the venetian blinds that covered the bank of floor-to-ceiling windows in her apartment bedroom.

“Good Lord,” she groaned. Alejandro was invading her dreams again and even though it had just been a dream her body was craving the kiss she’d been waiting for. The kiss that was in her imagination. She hadn’t had an erotic dream about Alejandro in a long time.

Any dreams she’d usually had about him since the miscarriage had brought tears to her eyes and reminded her of what she’d lost. What she’d been denied.

So dreams about him were more like nightmares.

Except for the one she’d just had, which still made her blood burn with need.

Harlequin Mills & Boon Medical Romance Novels, Holiday Celebrations

Introducing Charlotte Ellis

charlotte-ellis-bio-imageHello everyone!

I’m Charlotte the new Editorial Assistant for the Harlequin/Mills and Boon Medical Romance team. And seeing as I’ve been here at True Love towers for a couple of months I thought it was high time I introduced myself—but bear with me, writing about yourself is a lot harder than I first thought! Although as we’re on the countdown to Christmas and the Medical Romance Christmas line-up is in full swing I think it best to start there.

I’ve always been one of those people that was adamant Christmas celebrations should be saved until December and in our house the smooth melodies of Michael Bublé’s Christmas album and whimsical sound of ‘Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ (my favourite Christmas song) are not normally heard before December 1st. But recently I’ve realised how very wrong I was! Working at Harlequin/Mills and Boon you get the holiday season in abundance and I’m loving it! Not only do I get to work with the wonderful and real-life Medical Romance authors and our editorial team but the fact that our gorgeous doctor heroes start appearing in Christmas books from October means I can certainly see the benefits of the extended holiday season.

But that’s just one more thing to love about Christmas. For me the real magic of Christmas isn’t just the day itself but those few weeks in the run up to the special day and the anticipation that builds as each and every single chocolate is released from its little advent calendar prison!

So here are some of my favourite parts:

  1. The cold weather! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean actually being out in it! Being a netballer, I have had to endure the wind, rain and snow willingly on occasion, but I do not normally enjoy having to brave the elements. There is, however, a wonderfully magical appeal to curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy (though it’s not the same since the loss of McDreamy) and watching as the weather wages war outside.
  1. Family get-togethers. I love spending time with my family and Christmas for me is really an excuse to do just that. Our adaption of Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Disc’s’ into a family Christmas event has become an annual favourite.
  1. Christmas trees. Is there anything more wonderful than the smell of a Christmas tree?!
  1. The lights! Everything is lit up like, dare I say it, a Christmas tree, giving everything a beautiful glow and making the journey home from work much more festive.
  1. The chance to read a good book (or ten!). With the extra time off at Christmas the chance to read a good Christmassy book has finally arrived. And mixing it with a little romance makes it all the more magical. Indeed Medical Romance is stuffed full of Christmas crackers this year. From a wonderful Christmas duet by Emily Forbes and Amy Andrews, released in October, to a full on Christmas line up in November and December, including a gorgeous four-book seasonal linked miniseries set in maternity from Tina Beckett, Kate Hardy, Susannne Hampton and Scarlet Wilson and fabulous festive stories from Alison Roberts, Annie, O Neil, Janice Lynn, Amy Ruttan, Carol Marinelli, Sue MacKay, Susan Carlisle and Louisa Heaton. I can’t wait!

I’d love to hear from you so leave me a comment below (and tell me all about what makes your Christmas so special!)
